We’re excited to announce that Benepass has been named one of the Top 100 Early-Stage Startups to Work For in 2022 by executive search firm Will Reed.

Out of over 500 companies that raised Series A rounds in the past year, the Top 100 companies were chosen as employers of choice based on their mission, culture, growth trajectory, and founding leadership.

“We’ve worked with hundreds of early-stage B2B tech companies who are on mission to transform the way we live and work,” said Paige Robinson, Founder and CEO of Will Reed. “We believe the most successful companies are those like Benepass, who are committed to building human-first cultures that offer meaningful work and support the full employee experience.”

We’re honored to be recognized as a top employer among other ambitious early-stage companies building innovative solutions and creating great cultures along the way. As we celebrate the award, we want to take some time to reflect on our mission, culture, and growth.

Our mission

At Benepass, our mission is to help companies reimagine how they take care of their people. Over the past few years, we’ve seen the tide shift when it comes to the employer-employee relationship. Priorities have changed, and employees now want to work at companies that care about them as a whole person. They are demanding more from their employers and choosing to work for companies that support their mental, emotional, and physical wellness.

We created Benepass to make it easier for companies to do that. The traditional methods of benefits administration make it confusing for employees to access their benefits, and they create a lot of administrative burden for People teams. They also promote a one-size-fits-all approach to benefits that’s ultimately at odds with the fact that every employee has unique wants and needs.

With our card-first approach and easy-to-use, centralized platform, companies can build flexible benefits programs that give employees the freedom to use their benefits in the ways that make the most sense for them.

Our culture and values

We work with people-first companies that care deeply about creating strong cultures and prioritizing employee wellness. Our goal is to do the same at Benepass, and we have a core set of values that guide who we are, how we work, and how we decide.

Who we are

  • Empathetic: We want to create a culture of respect where everyone feels heard and valued.
  • Seek joy: We have fun! We celebrate everyone’s wins, whether they’re big or small, personal or professional, team or individual.
  • Set audacious goals: We know that disruption and innovation are hard. We dream big and achieve big.

How we work

  • Clarify purpose: State the obvious. Avoid assumptions and ask the question.
  • Write it down: Decisions are made when there is written agreement. Meeting artifacts are written.
  • Take ownership: Not blame. Ownership is end-to-end, penny-for-penny. Mistakes happen, and they’re growth opportunities.

How we decide

  • Serve People teams: We exist to serve People teams and their employees. In that order.
  • Bias toward action: Share work at 50%. Optimize reversible decisions for speed.
  • Obligation to dissent: Debate kindly and assume good intent.

How we put our people first

Along with setting clear values, we believe in empowering our employees by showing them appreciation and providing them with the tools and support they need to do their best work. Here are a few ways we do that:

  • Flexible, autonomous work: We’re remote-first and take pride in the fact that our employees can live where they’re happiest. We trust employees and give them the freedom to work autonomously as long as they’re available during team-wide hours set aside for collaboration.
  • No meeting Wednesdays: This helps reduce video call fatigue and gives our employees uninterrupted time to focus on their work and schedule their day according to their work styles.
  • Quarterly off-sites: We understand the importance of meeting in person as a group given that we're a 100% remote company. We host a company off-site every quarter in different locations in North America, with all costs covered by Benepass. This gives us a chance to collaborate and to get to know each other as human beings. This is crucial as we continue to not only scale our product but also our company culture.
  • Recognition program: Our internal recognition program gives us the chance to highlight an employee who embodies our core values of empathy, seeking joy, and setting audacious goals.
  • Benepass perks: We want to provide benefits and perks that will make a difference in our employees’ lives outside of work. We offer competitive benefits and perks, including $430 per month toward health insurance, fully covered dental and vision, $150 for internet/cell phone, $500 for a home office setup, $100 for wellness, and memberships to Talkspace, Teladoc, and OneMedical.
  • Unlimited PTO: We genuinely believe in work-life balance even though we're a hyper-growth startup. We know almost every startup has "unlimited PTO" and that it poses its own set of challenges, but we truly encourage all our employees to take time for themselves and disconnect. We understand that to thrive within a company that has audacious goals, self-care is crucial.
